Nigeria faces a critical humanitarian situation characterized by a severe nutrition crisis linked to conflict and displacement, a surge in civilian casualties due to increased IED threats, and frequent natural disasters like fires, all of which exacerbate gender-based violence (GBV), undermine sexual and reproductive health (SRH), disrupt essential services, and hinder socio-economic recovery. UNFPA and its partners are actively responding through the provision of SRH and GBV services, skills training, and awareness campaigns, despite a significant funding gap in the 2025 Humanitarian Needs Response Plan.

Through targeted interventions by dedicated frontline workers, UNFPA has achieved significant results in providing essential services to vulnerable individuals in Nigeria. This includes delivering SRH services to 11,940 people, offering protection and GBV support to 17,784 individuals, providing skills acquisition training to 4,920 women and girls, and reaching 7,147 community members with vital information on GBV and SRH. These efforts aim to address the critical humanitarian situation marked by conflict, displacement, and natural disasters that exacerbate GBV and undermine SRH.

In March 2025, the GBV Sub-Sector, in collaboration with 33 partners, made significant progress in addressing gender-based violence in the region by providing essential services to 3,756 women and girls across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, reaching over 23,305 people through mobile outreach with GBV information, and distributing 4,768 dignity kits. The GBV Area of Responsibility also submitted a funding appeal of US$ 21.44 million for the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan. Furthermore, UNFPA and partners conducted training on clinical management of rape, participated in meetings regarding HNRP adjustments due to funding changes, addressed SRH WG coordination, anticipated the arrival of IARH kits, and actively contributed to task forces and justice sector reform teams to support GBV survivors.

UNFPA Nigeria requires US$ 15,112,727 in 2025 to support its Humanitarian Needs Response Plan to provide essential SRH and GBV services to vulnerable populations affected by conflict, displacement, and natural disasters. As of February 2025, only US$ 1,000,000 (6.6%) has been secured, leaving a critical funding gap that threatens UNFPA's capacity to effectively respond to the escalating humanitarian crisis and meet the urgent needs of those most at risk.
