Situation Report #6 on the UNFPA Response to the Earthquake in Myanmar

Resource date: May 2025

Author: UNFPA Myanmar

Five weeks after the 28 March earthquakes, Myanmar continues to face a deepening humanitarian crisis. In the 58 hardest-hit townships, 17.2 million people are affected, including 6.3 million in urgent need of assistance and protection. Among them are 4.6 million women of reproductive age. Overcrowded displacement sites, damaged health infrastructure, high temperatures, and limited access to clean water and sanitation are compounding risks — particularly for women and girls. Protection concerns, including violence, harassment, and lack of privacy, have escalated amid insecurity, movement restrictions, and disrupted services. Humanitarian access remains severely constrained due to damaged infrastructure, armed conflict, and administrative barriers.

In response, UNFPA is delivering critical sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services through mobile outreach teams, emergency clinics, and women- and girl-friendly spaces. More than 20,000 people have accessed essential SRH services, while nearly 19,500 received integrated GBV and mental health support. Dignity kits and women’s essential items have been distributed, and helplines remain active. UNFPA continues to lead coordination as GBV Sub-Cluster lead, supporting 49 partners, updating referral pathways, and conducting Psychological First Aid training. Partners are also participating in rapid assessments and advocating for safe space expansion, gender-sensitive shelter, and PSEA integration across the response.

UNFPA is appealing for US$12 million to sustain and scale up life-saving services from April to September 2025. To date, US$3.7 million has been secured through support from the UNFPA Emergency Fund, Australia, FCDO, CERF, and the Government of Korea. With the monsoon season approaching and needs rapidly increasing, urgent and flexible funding is required to maintain essential health and protection services for the most vulnerable women and girls.
